Back when he lived in the village, he feared one of the villagers might call the police and tell them Alois supported himself and his little brother by stealing food and money. He'd spent many nights lying awake next to Luca in their abandoned little hut, too terrified to sleep. He was afraid some officers would come banging at the door any moment. He knew they would have brought him away. And then Luca would have been left alone, with no one to take care of him.
